Helping nervous patients to engage with Forest Dental
There are fewer things in our lives that can make us feel more nervous than having to visit the dental practice for treatment. Even the most level-headed of us seem to have some form of irrational fear or thinking when it comes to the need to undergo dental treatment. This can often create a block that causes someone to either put off going for treatment or ignore that they need treatment altogether, both of which can lead to the development of dental issues which could have been avoided.
We need to recognise that while creating an irrational fear in our minds may appear trivial and overdramatic to others around us, this fear is genuine at the time and should not be belittled by anyone. Feeling nervous about any situation that may make us feel uncomfortable and creates an experience that we may not choose to go through is a perfectly natural human response. It is part of the fight or flight thinking that we all try to use to our advantage to prevent us entering into experiences that we may wish to avoid.
At Forest Dental we understand how difficult it can be for someone to overcome their nerves or fear in order to receive the dental treatment that they may need. This can also be an issue to stop some from receiving cosmetic dental treatments that they would really like to pursue too. Our main role when trying to get any nervous patients to engage with our practice and the treatments that we provide is to allow the patient to find the way that makes them feel happy to engage and to facilitate this when possible.
Helping you to be calm
We know that it can be easier said than done when someone tells you to stay calm and not to overthink any situation you are entering into that makes you feel nervous, especially when it is a situation like needing to receive some dental treatment. This could be mainly down to having a lack of understanding about any treatment you are to undergo or a misguided idea in your mind about the work of a dentist, which many people unfortunately share.
When you come to Forest Dental we want you to feel comfortable enough to be able to engage with any treatment that you need. This may be gained by you feeling you can ask questions and voice your concerns, as talking these through with you may help and may be the key to you being able to undergo treatment successfully.
If you are a parent bringing a child for treatment then you may expect your child to be nervous going into a strange environment to see a dentist, as a child may not fully understand the need for treatment. If you find that your child is overly nervous about seeing the dentist then you may wish to mention this to a member of our reception staff, then they can arrange for a member of our team to sit down with them for a chat, where their fear can be talked about and a way forward can be found.
Let’s work together
Here at Forest Dental, we want our patients to work together with us to overcome any nerves they have about any dental treatment they may need, so we invite you to keep talking with us. Through communication, we will find a way forward for you that allows you to undergo treatment that puts you at ease.
